Help Wanted: Restoration of Badfish Creek
A group of Town of Rutland residents is forming to protect, restore and preserve Badfish Creek. We encourage you to consider joining our efforts.
In spring, 2006, area residents met with Dane County staff to request inclusion of Badfish Creek in the 2006-2011 Dane County Parks and Open Space Plan (POSP). In June, 2006, the Dane County Parks Commission voted to include Badfish Creek in the new POSP. The Dane County Board approved the POSP on December 7, 2006.
Badfish Creek is classified as needing protection in the Dane County Water Body Classification Study, Phase I, March, 2005. It is listed as having "impaired water" in the Winter, 2005 edition of LakeLine, a publication of the North American Lake Management Society. It is designated in the POSP as a Tier II stream. A lower portion of the Creek is already being managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Now that the plan has been approved, lands located along Badfish Creek and its tributaries-Rutland Branch and Oregon Branch-are eligible for financial assistance through the Dane County Conservation Fund Grant Program. The grant program assists local units of government and non-profits with 501(c)(3) status in purchasing land and land rights identified in the Dane County POSP.
A meeting is being planned for February, 2007, to consult with a representative of the Rock River Coalition who will visit our area to help with start-up activities. Whether you live in the township or are an area resident and have an interest in protecting Badfish Creek, you are invited to participate. Anyone interested in participating in this effort, including landowners along the Creek, its tributaries or its wetlands can contact Caroline Werner at email@example.com or call (608) 835-8971 for more information.
